Easy Ideas for Celebrating Michaelmas
“In the sight of the angels I will sing your praises, Lord.” – responsorial Psalm for the Feast of the Archangels
Michaelmas (The Feast of the Archangels) is September 29
The Feast of the Archangels (or, Michaelmas) is a powerful feast for celebrating the 3 Archangels: St. Michael, St. Gabriel, and St. Raphael.
Who are the archangels?
Did you know that each archangel’s name has a special meaning, and they each have special patronages?
“Michael” means “Who is like God?”
“Gabriel” means “God is mighty” or “God is my strength.”
“Raphael” means “Healer of God” or “God has healed.”
Here are some of the patronages of each angel:
St. Michael: against storms, against temptations, artists, bakers, bankers, dying people, police officers
St. Gabriel: broadcasters, clergy, messengers, post offices, telephones, televisions
St. Raphael: against sickness, against eye problems, mental illness, guardian angels, travelers

Have some blackberries! Legend says that when Satan was cast out of heaven, he fell into a blackberry bush. The tradition that arose from this is that Michaelmas is the last day to eat blackberries because Satan the berries sour when he fell on them!
