Liturgical living is such a fun, beautiful, and meaningful way to pass on the Catholic faith to our children. It also does not have to be expensive or difficult! I mentioned my favorite Advent saints in this post. Today, I have an easy and cheap DIY to celebrate St. Lucy’s Feast Day! I will show you how to make a DIY Catholic Saint Lucy crown for only $5. You can’t beat that!
Who was St. Lucy?
Here are some fast facts about St. Lucy:
- Her feast day is December 13th
- She lived in Italy in the 6th century
- Her feast day is BIG deal in Sweden
- St. Lucy was a martyr and consecrated virgin
- She prayed for St. Agatha’s intercession for her mother to be healed of her haemorrhagic illness AND for her mother to allow her not to marry. Both prayers were answered!
- She is the patron of eyes, the blind, eye troubles, and eye ailments
How do Catholics celebrate St. Lucy's Feast Day?
Traditionally, the eldest daughter of the house will dress up as St. Lucy. The costume consists of a white dress, red cape, red sash, and wreath crown with candles.
Lead by the eldest, the children in the family will serve their parents breakfast in bed that usually consists of sweet St. Lucy buns (Lussekatt in Swedish) and coffee.
The buns are shaped in a “S” shape with 2 raisins in the grooves of the curves to look like eyes!
DIY Catholic Saint Lucy Crown for $5 in 5 steps!
I was thrilled when I found all of the supplies for our Saint Lucy crown!
Here is what you will need:
- 15 inch wreath
- 3 packs of “Emergency Candles” (I like these because they are small and they include a base that is useful for keeping the candle in place on the wreath. They also come in a 2 pack for $1.25!)
That’s it!
Here is what you do:
- Choose how many candles you would like to use. 15 inches is small so we chose 5.
- Take a candle and find a spot on the wreath. Secure some of the wire branches around the candle.
- Attach the candle stand underneath. Then, place some other wire branches across the bottom of the stand to secure it.
- Repeat steps (3 and 4) with the rest of the candles.
- Enjoy!
It really is that simple and just sturdy enough to wear while serving St. Lucy buns and singing some hymns!
Note: If you wish to wear the crown for more than a few minutes, I suggest cutting a piece of felt the same size and shape as the bottom of the crown. This will make it more comfortable!
